How a Pressure Switch Works
This part plays a prominent role as your furnace prepares to work in your home.
Here’s what goes on after your thermostat’s call for heat:
- Your furnace’s control board commences running the draft inducer blower motor. This pushes out combustion gases from the heat exchanger and moves in new gas and air so the burners can fire.
- When the pressure switch senses that enough air is being pulled into the burners, it closes and commands the control board to ignite the furnace.
- Your furnace ignites and provides heat.
What Happens When a Pressure Switch Breaks Down
When your pressure switch isn’t functioning the way it should, you’ll likely hear the fan run and the switch clicking a few times before the furnace switches off completely. When a part isn’t working right, your furnace will turn off for your safety.
Your furnace will tell you something is wrong with a red flash from its indicator light, which it uses to exhibit error codes. It uses this red light to flash code, like Morse code.
You may notice fast flashes or an alternating slow flash as it passes on a fault code.
